Top 10 Tips To Grow Your Best Running Stroller

Best Running Stroller and jogging stroller

Best Running Stroller and jogging stroller

Whether you're trying to get in shape after your baby is born or your hobby is marathons, buying the best running stroller is essential to keeping your workout has sel-free. There tons of styles to choose from and many sport different features. While prioritizing what is important, keep in mind safety should always come first. Beyond that basic standard, you'll find things such as weight and wheel size that impact how your workout goes. We are going to share our top 10 favorites and tell you why we think they're the best classic jogging stroller for the money.

Benefits of a Jogging Stroller for Runners

As soon as you become a parent, finding personal time for exercise becomes a challenge. Figuring out who's going to watch the baby, how long you'll be gone, and what to do if you're needed in the in term are great excuses for missing workouts. A much easier solution is to just take the baby with you. A jogging stroller lets you do this, and they just look downright cool. Most parents find that their child enjoys the runs over time, as the scenery gives them plenty to look at. Younger babies tend to fall asleep from the vibration and movement.

• The best running stroller will glide effortlessly along, with minimal effort;

• Highly maneuverable and turns easily;

• Built to pound the pavement, making them more durable than regular strollers;

• Allows you the freedom to vary your workout. For example, pushing weight uphill with two hands or sprinting with one hand.

Features of the Best Running Stroller

Safety wise, there are a couple of bare minimums you should look for. A wrist strap is something you must have. The downside to having a stroller that almost propels itself is that it can run away from you on hills. A wrist strap stops this from happening. The second feature is an easy wheel locking system or handlebar brake. It should be simple to operate, with minimal effort. Last, but not least, is reflectors. Although most people don't jog at night, visibility reflectors are good to have just in case you ever do get stuck out after sundown. Now that we've covered those basics, lets get down to other specific features.

Design

There's two basic designs of light weight jogging strollers. The first is a classic design, which looks like any traditional stroller except for the fact that it only has three wheels. The other design is called a pod. It looks nice but it's real function is to protect your baby in any weather type. Featuring a wrap around shelter that encloses your baby to block out wind, sun, rain, or snow, the pod can be converted to pull behind a bicycle or even skis. The downside to the pod is that your baby can't recline- it only has one fixed upright position.

Wheel Base and Wheels

The narrower the wheelbase, the more maneuverable the stroller will be. Those with the slimmest wheelbase will also usually have smaller wheels with the front swiveling. This is great if you plan to use this stroller for things other than jogging. The wheel will turn, just like a bicycle wheel does. Unlike fixed wheel strollers, you don't have to lift it to change direction.

Fixed wheel jogging strollers are sometimes preferred by serious runners. Although you wont be able to steer as easily, it generally provides the smoothest ride with the largest tires. Some designs offer both- a swiveling wheel that can be locked into the forward position when needed. Tire size comes into to play here, as well as any additions such as shocks.

The actual wheel sizes are much larger than traditional counterparts, varying between 12 and 24 inches. They are built like a bicycle tire. Expect to have to add air periodically. The larger the wheels, the easier the stroller will glide. You'll have to balance personal preference against what you'll actually be using the stroller the most for. A good rule of thumb is:

•12 inches- good for shopping centers and sidewalks

•16 inches- good for paved roads and a little trail use

•20+ inches- smoothest ride and can handle rough terrain of trail running

3 Wheel  vs 4 Wheel

Why can't you jog with a regular four wheel stroller? At first glance, this may seem like a reasonable question. If you break it down though, you'll see why this is a very bad idea. There is a huge difference in three wheel and four wheel designs. To be maneuverable, four wheel strollers use small, swiveling wheels. They are designed to roll on smooth services. On pavement or trails the wheels would be wobbly. You also would need to push with both hands because they tip easily on uneven surfaces. It's also very likely that the vibration would cause screws and attachments to shake loose from the frame.

Rim and Spokes

The metal that makes up the wheel rim and spokes is important. Stainless steel or Alloy offers an advantage over plastic and mixed metal materials. It offers your baby a smoother ride and it won't rust. If you opt for a stroller with a cheaper grade of metal, try to keep it out of water and spray it with a rust inhibitor. Choose stainless or alloy wheels if you're serious about running. Plastic is lighter weight and is good if you're using it to run errands or do light walking around your neighborhood.

Portability

The best running stroller will also be portable. No matter which stroller you buy, you won't use it if its difficult to fold and transport. Things that we like to see are one handed closures, with a handle or button. It should fold down into a compact package and fit inside a normal sized vehicle.

Car Seat and Base for the Best Jogging Stroller Travel System

Many jogging strollers are compatible with a travel system- a complimentary car seat and base. This is perfect if you're planning to use your jogging stroller as an all-round go-getter. For actually jogging, most pediatricians advise waiting until your baby is old enough to hold up their head by themselves. Some parents start earlier than others, but the average age is around 8 months old. It's a good idea to check with your pediatrician before you start. Regardless, a good travel system saves money in the long run because you won't have to upgrade strollers as your baby grows. Both the car seat and base should have adequate safety ratings.

What Parents are Saying

"I am extremely happy with this stroller, I am an Engineer and I found it to be very well designed and constructed. It tracks perfectly straight with the front wheel locked in the fixed position, and does not pull to any side at all. The front wheel has absolutely no wobble, I have heard this complaint about swivel wheel strollers, but this one tracks perfectly. There is a nice feature that I haven't seen on other swivel wheel strollers, it has a lock/unlock release lever under the handle, so you can lock or release the front swivel wheel on the go, and not have to bend over and find the release above the swivel wheel like on other models. The cup holder and storage tray are great quality and have rubber tabs to hold drinks securely. The child tray swings out of the way to help getting children in and out. The quality of all materials used on the stroller are above what I expected, and what I have seen used on other strollers."   - Driveby79

It is light weight, rides really smoothly for baby, and is so much more comfortable to run with than my other jogger. What Parents are Saying

"THIS IS LITERALLY THE BEST BABY PRODUCT WE HAVE EVER BOUGHT! I was a little skeptical when it came to spending so much money on ONE baby item, and it took months of pleading with my husband to purchase such a high end stroller... but WOW! It is worth EVERY penny!  I love that the handlebar is so comfortable and adjustable. I am 5'2" and my husband is 6'3" - we can both use this stroller without any issues.

The wheels seem to hold air much better than my Baby Trend.

The seat is SO comfortable for my little one. The material is durable, easy to wipe clean, and so padded. The 5-point safety harness is very easy to use and seems to support her better than the Baby Trend.

The brake is VERY easy to put on and release, with just the tap of your foot. Much better than having to lock each wheel individually!

Jogging with this thing is a dream! I am a new runner, VERY new - and this stroller makes it a lot easier to exercise with my little one along. The front wheel swivels when necessary, locks when you need it, and doesn't have the death wobble like the Baby Trend did. I ran 2.5 miles with it, without having to lock it... on a round and curvy track - the wheel remained stable, but was able to turn it slightly when going around the curves... AMAZING! I tried to do that with my old stroller and the death wobble nearly flipped my stroller." - dwilliams89

Deminsions:49 x 21.5 x 43 inches

Wheel size: 16"

What Parents are Saying

"LOVE this jogger. No wiggly tire, no shaking. My husband put it together for me, he aired up the tires because they ship flat, and tightened everything up nicely. I lock the wheel (as you should according to the manual) when I run and even walk.

The sun shade is large enough to cover the kids, the buckles are very basic compared to the fancier Britax models, it might just be me but the handle seems like it *could* come out a bit further from the body of the stroller for a more comfortable jog. The foot plate is wide enough for my kids to both put their feet on it if they wanted (kids are 1 and almost 3).

I just want to emphasize how STABLE this thing is. It doesn't even wiggle when I'm running, I did sprints with this for a HIIT workout and at my fastest there wasn't even a wiggle.

The fabric looks like it would easy to wipe down if I ever am brave enough to give the kids something to drink or eat while in there. The bottom compartment would be big enough for pretty much anything, and the speakers are LOUD. It actually seems louder and clearer when the lid that encloses the speakers is propped up instead of closed. - Alexandria

Child's weight: up to 50#

Stroller weight: 30#

Deminsions:40 x 24 x 42 inches

Wheel size: 16"

What Parents are Saying

"Worth the money. I've had it for about 6 months now and have had zero issues with it. Each time I use it, I run a minimum of 3 miles so its had good wear and still no issues. The baby (2 year old) loves it, falls asleep while I run most of the time. Only down side is its very large, takes up a good bit of space, so I leave it in the rear of my SUV and its pretty darn heavy. I would recommend it for average runners, approx. 12-16 miles per week runner, but not for a runner who runs competitively. - Tamron

What Parents are Saying

"Okay, so I've waited to do this review until I had the opportunity to take this stroller over the diverse landscape that I live in. I've taken this stroller on the beach, in the forest, on long street walks, on docks, on buses and boats.

This stroller has held up very well in all of these categories, and I constantly find myself impressed with it. If my three year old daughter is walking, this thing even goes comfortably over loose sand. It starts to sink a bit when she rides in it, but does well over wet, packed sand. It rolls like a dream on harder surfaces, and is like a cloud on rough, uneven surfaces. This stroller has a narrow profile that makes it easier to maneuver through narrow, crowded sidewalks. The storage underneath is enough to hold both mine and my daughter's bags when we walk home from work. It folds and unfolds very easily and intuitively. - Emily

Depending on whether you're an avid jogger or a weekend warrior, you'll find a wide range of options and features. The best running stroller for your individual needs will depend on what features are important to you. The high degree of maneuverability, versatility, and functional design make jogging strollers a top pick for any parent with an active lifestyle.
